Resume

Miguel M. Gonçalves is Professor at School of Psychology, University of Minho, Portugal. He was associate editor of Psychotherapy Research (the Journal of the Society of Psychotherapy Research), between 2010 and 2015. His main research interests centers in the narrative and dialogical processes in psychotherapy. He and his team have developed the concept of innovative moment, as events in psychotherapy in which novelties towards a previous problematic pattern emerge. This concept has been inspiring his research projects from the past years. Several coding systems were developed to track the processes of change in psychotherapy: The Innovative Moments Coding System (IMCS, Gonçalves et al., 2011), used to identify Innovative Moments; the Ambivalence Coding System (ACS, Gonçalves et al., 2011), used to identify the emergence of ambivalence in therapy sessions; and the Ambivalence Resolution Coding System (ARCS, Braga et al., 2015), to track the way ambivalence is resolved along therapy.
