Cambridge Cognition published an interview with the researcher Eduardo López-Caneda, winner of the 2023 CANTAB Research Grant (Secondary Award) in the scope of the project “The Brain, the Bug, and the Binge: The interplay between binge drinking, gut microbiota and brain functioning”.
In his interview, the CIPsi researcher shared how the award will help him in his goal of understanding cognitive training and neuromodulation as a potential strategy for modifying drinking habits.

Eduardo López-Caneda highlighted the importance of funding initiatives for researchers and described his interest in research regarding the neurocognitive consequences of alcohol abuse in adolescents and young adults, as well as the use of interventions to reduce alcohol consumption.
The award-winning project aims to study the interaction between the brain, the gut microbiome and the damage caused by excessive alcohol consumption, exploring the therapeutic potential of interventions targeting the gut microbiome. The study aims to assess whether the pattern of alcohol consumption can induce dysbiosis of the gut microbiome, determine whether the altered microbial profile is associated with neuropsychological deficits and examine whether the administration of psychobiotics can improve the composition of the gut microbiome and reduce the cognitive/neurological effects of alcohol.
CANTAB Research Grant is an international award open to all individuals carrying out research in the fields of neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry and subjects related to cognitive function.
