Workshop Nudging Out of Loneliness: The Impact of Social Isolation on Well-Being and Cognitive Health in the Elderly

On November 18, 2024, the School of Economics and Management will host the workshop of the Nudging Out of Loneliness (NOLA) project. The event aims to foster a dialogue on the effects of loneliness and social isolation on the well-being of the elderly, exploring how enhancing social relationships can contribute to improvements in cognitive capacities and neuroplasticity.

The organization brings together experts in neuroscience, behavioral sciences, and social management, with the participation of Adriana Sampaio, coordinator of the Psychological Neuroscience Laboratory at CIPsi, who, along with Cristiana Cerqueira Leal from the Research Center on Economic and Business Policies (NIPE), is part of the Organizing Committee and Scientific Coordination of the workshop.

Adriana Sampaio will open the event and deliver a presentation on the neurobiological perspective of loneliness, discussing the implications of isolation on the brain and cognitive processes of the elderly.

The program also includes interventions from specialists in social management and behavioral sciences, with contributions from leading professionals. The workshop will conclude with a roundtable discussion, moderated by Adriana Sampaio, for exchanging experiences and strategies on influencing behaviors to reduce the negative effects of loneliness and promote the health and well-being of the elderly population.

This workshop aims to deepen the understanding of the role of behavior in combating social isolation and the benefits of such impact on the health and quality of life of the elderly. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing one of the greatest challenges of an aging population.
